- No confirmed foodborne outbreaks of cyclosporiasis were identified in Minnesota in 2023.
There were 77 Cyclospora cases reported in 2023 (1.35 per 100,000 population). This is markedly higher than the number of cases reported from 2013 to 2022 (median, 32.5; range, 1 to 156 per year). In 2023, 49% of cases occurred in people who resided in the metropolitan area.
The median age of cases was 46 years (range, 7 to 84 years). Fifty-one percent were female. Of the 76 cases for which race was reported, 61 (80%) were white, 6 (8%) were Asian, 1 (1%) was Black, 1 (1%) was American Indian/Alaskan Native, and 7 (9%) were other race. Of the 71 cases for which ethnicity was reported, 14 (20%) were Hispanic. Three percent were hospitalized; the median length of hospitalization was 2 days (range, 1 to 3 days). Sixty-eight percent of infections occurred during May through July. Of the 77 cases for whom data were available, 14 (24%) reported travel outside the United States during the 2 weeks prior to illness onset.
