2024 Highlights
- In 2024, two unrelated cases of mumps were confirmed in Minnesota.
- No outbreaks of mumps were reported in Minnesota.
- Nationally, mumps case counts were low in 2024, and no significant outbreaks occurred.
In 2024, two mumps cases were reported. The two cases reported were classified as probable (tested positive by IgM serology). Both cases had a history of travel: one within the United States to Florida, and the other internationally to India. One case was under 5 years of age, and the second case was between 18-49 years of age. One case reported one documented dose of MMR vaccine and the second case reported not knowing their vaccination status, and no vaccination records could be located. Both cases reported parotitis and one case reported orchitis. Neither case was hospitalized.
In recent years, mumps case counts in the U.S. have shown a slight increase but remain low compared to the elevated incidence observed in the mid-2000s. While large-scale mumps outbreaks were not a significant concern in 2024, continued MMR vaccination remains essential to prevent future outbreaks, particularly in communal settings such as colleges and other close-contact environments.
