Immunization Assessment

The childhood immunization assessment function in MIIC allows users to monitor coverage rates for immunizations routinely recommended in early childhood. Depending on the option selected, users can assess coverage rates as of a specific date or assess whether the selected population was up to date by 24 months of age.

The assessment reports section allows users to choose a population to assess:

A standard population of children age 24 through 35 months of age

Use this option to assess whether 2-year-old clients were up-to-date with immunizations routinely recommended in early childhood by the time they turned 24 months of age.

• Population included: Clients 24-35 months of age.
• Assesses coverage by: 24 months of age.
• Report types available: Summary Report; Patients Not Up to Date List; Not Up to Date Report; Missed Opportunities Report.

A population defined by an existing list within MIIC

Use this option to assess whether a defined group of your client population was up-to-date with immunizations routinely recommended in early childhood by the time they turned 24 months. You may consider a list-based assessment for a birth year cohort of patients, a list of WIC participants, a list of children in a designated room of a childcare center, a list of patients with complex medical comorbidities, etc. The list must have been previously created in MIIC.

• Population included: Clients included in the list selected.
• Assesses coverage by: 24 months of age.
• Report types available: Summary Report; Patients Not Up to Date List; Not Up to Date Report.

A custom user-defined, age-based population assessed by 24 months of age

Use this option to assess whether clients in the age range selected were up-to-date by 24 months of age. This option can be used to assess clients younger than 24 months of age, to identify and bring clients up-to-date before their second birthday.

• Population included: User-selected age range, in months or years.
• Assesses coverage by: 24 months of age.
• Report types available: Summary Report; Patients Not Up to Date List; Not Up to Date Report.

A custom user-defined, age-based population assessed by assessment date

Use this option to assess whether clients in the age range selected were up-to-date by the selected assessment date. The assessment date is commonly the date the user generated the assessment report, though some users may change this to a set date to monitor coverage rates over time.

• Population included: User-selected age range, in months or years.
• Assesses coverage by: User-selected assessment date.
• Report types available: Summary Report.

The adolescent immunization assessment function in MIIC allows users to monitor coverage rates for immunizations routinely recommended in adolescence. Depending on the selected option, users can assess coverage rates as of a specific date or assess whether the selected population was up-to-date by 13 years of age.

A standard population of adolescents 13 through 17 years of age

Use this option to assess whether clients 13 through 17 years of age were up-to-date with adolescent, older teen, and/or older childhood vaccinations by the date the assessment was generated.

• Population included: Clients ages 13 through 17 years.
• Assesses coverage by: Date assessment was generated.
• Report types available: Summary Report; Missed Opportunities Report.

A population defined by an existing list within MIIC

Use this option to assess whether a defined group of your client population was up-to-date with adolescent and/or older childhood immunizations by the selected assessment date. You may consider a list-based assessment for a birth year cohort of patients, a list of incoming seventh graders, a list of patients with complex medical comorbidities, etc. The list must have been previously created in MIIC.

• Population included: Clients included in the list selected.
• Assesses coverage by: User-selected assessment date.
• Report types available: Summary Report.

A custom user-defined, age-based population assessed by 13 years of age

Use this option to assess whether clients in the age range selected were up-to-date by 13 years of age. This option can be used to assess clients younger than 13 years of age and to identify and bring clients up-to-date before their thirteenth birthday.

• Population included: User-selected age range, in years.
• Assesses coverage by 13 years of age.
• Report types available: Summary Report.

A custom user-defined, age-based population assessed by assessment date

Use this option to assess whether clients in the age range selected were up-to-date by the selected assessment date. The assessment date is commonly the date the user generated the assessment report, though some users may change this to a set date to monitor coverage rates over time.

• Population included: User-selected age range, in years.
• Assesses coverage by: User-selected assessment date.
• Report types available: Summary Report.

The Single Vaccine Assessment function in MIIC allows users to monitor coverage rates for certain vaccine groups. You start by selecting the vaccine group whose coverage rate you would like to assess from the drop-down.

For example, below are choices available for the influenza assessment.

A standard population of children 24 through 35 months of age, adolescents 13 through 17 years of age, adults 18 through 64 years of age, and older adults 65 years of age and older

Use this option to assess whether clients in pre-selected age groupings received an influenza immunization in the previous influenza season.

• Population included: Clients ages 24-35 months, 13-17 years, 18-64 years, and 65+ years.
• Assesses receipt of influenza vaccine: In previous influenza season.
• Report types available: Summary Report.

A population defined by an existing list within MIIC

Use this option to assess whether a defined group of your client population received an influenza vaccine within the selected date range. You may consider a list-based assessment for specific groups (for example, birth year cohort of patients, a list of WIC participants, a list of patients with complex medical comorbidities). The list must have been previously created in MIIC.

• Population included: Clients included in the list selected. If desired, you can select an age range to further restrict who from the list is assessed for receipt of influenza immunization.
• Assesses receipt of influenza vaccine: In date range selected.
• Report types available: Summary Report.

A custom user-defined, age-based population

Use this option to assess whether clients in the age range(s) selected received an influenza immunization in the date range selected. You can assess up to four cohorts at once with this option.

• Population included: Up to four user-selected age ranges, in months or years.
• Assesses receipt of influenza vaccine: In date range selected.
• Report types available: Summary Report.

1. From the management screen, click the view icon to go to the Assessment Reports page.
2. Check the box(es) for the report you would like to generate. Click the Generate Output button. The assessment report(s) will appear in the Generated Reports section once the status displays 100%.
3. Click the Report View button to view the corresponding report.

Assessment cohorts are saved for 30 days. Follow the steps below to manually delete an assessment cohort:

1. Select Manage Assessment from the left-hand navigation menu under Assessment Reports to view the Manage Assessment screen.
2. Click the red X icon next to the assessment cohort you wish to delete.

The Summary Report is available for each assessment type and provides coverage rates for the clients included in the assessment. The bar graph visually displays coverage rates and how those compare to statewide averages. The table provides the number of clients and the percentage of the cohort up-to-date for the listed immunizations. The MN Average column also includes the statewide average. Minnesota statewide averages are updated annually.

The Summary Report for the Single Vaccine Assessment does not contain information about statewide averages but still displays the coverage rates for the selected age groups.

The Patients Not Up-to-Date by 24 Months report is available for the childhood assessment type and provides a list of clients who were not up-to-date by 24 months of age. This report can help provider organizations identify clients who need to be recalled to the clinic for catch-up vaccination and identify trends in vaccinating children in their practice that are not up to date by 24 months of age.

In the X = Not Up to Date By 24 Months columns, there will be an X under the vaccine group that the client was not up-to-date for by 24 months of age.

In the 'Still Overdue' column, there will be an X if the client is still due for one or more immunizations.

The Missed Opportunities Report is available for the childhood and adolescent assessment types. This report informs organizations of trends in missed opportunities. A missed opportunity is when a vaccine could have been given to a client at their last vaccination visit, but that vaccine was not given. The report helps providers identify trends to support quality improvement activities.

For each vaccine, the report displays the count of missed opportunities (MO count) and the rate of missed opportunities (MO rate).
