Training Descriptions and Registration

Child and Teen Checkups

C&TC provides training throughout the state to those who screening children and young adults in Minnesota.

To request a C&TC training for your staff/organization, please submit a C&TC Training Request.

Standard Training Descriptions

Overview of evidence-based recommendations for performing recommended and required components of a complete C&TC well child exam. Information is provided on specific screening procedures, considerations and strategies for providing appropriate adolescent care, referral, and follow-up, and health equity.

Intended for: Those who provide and assist in providing C&TC screening (providers, nurses, MAs, Head Start, trained support staff or aides, C&TC or Maternal and Child Health coordinators and outreach workers, clinic and public health admins, and health plan representatives).

Register for Best Practices in Well Child Screening - $60/person

Currently unavailable due to content renovation.

Includes an introduction to the C&TC screening exam, standard screening components, a systematic review of a physical exam, range of normal findings, common problems and referral criteria. Also includes is a practicum of participant demos with child models, preparation homework, practicing with a mentor in their practice setting, and on-site clinical consultation.

Intended for: RNs and PHNs who plan to actively provide C&TC screenings with/in 3 - 6 months have NOT been trained, and work in a practice setting that qualifies them to be an eligible provider to bill for C&TC screening exams. For more information, refer to the Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) Provider Manual C&TC section about eligible provider criteria.

Full Rate is intended for registrants covered by C&TC Administrative Services Contract Funds (e.g. County or Tribal Public Health Nurses).

Reduced Rate is intended for registrants from tribal health, Head Start, or school-based clinics that do not receive C&TC Administrative Funding.

Hearing Basic: Includes basic anatomy, audiometer care and use, preparation and performing pure tone audiometry screening, otoacoustic emissions screening (OAE), pass/refer/rescreen criteria, and documentation.

Vision Basic: Includes external anatomy, visual conditions, performing near and distance visual acuity screening, recommended visual acuity charts, plus lenses, pass/refer/rescreen criteria, and documentation.

Intended for: Anyone who performs hearing and vision screening for children. Medical assistants, school health assistants, volunteers and other non-nurses who perform vision and hearing screening for children in Head Start, Early Childhood Screening, schools, clinics, and other community settings. May also be sufficient for nurses who provide only basic hearing and vision screenings.

Register for Hearing and Vision Basic Screening Skills - $60/person

The Hearing and Vision Basic Screening Skills Training is included within this training. In addition, the hearing portion includes in-depth ear anatomy and physiology, risk assessment/hearing history, definitions of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, otoscopy, tympanometry, and otoacoustic emissions screening (OAE). The vision portion includes a review of myopia, hyperopia, amblyopia, and pupillary light and red reflex procedures. This training will include time to practice skills learned.

Intended for: RNs/LSNs/PHNs who perform hearing and vision screening at Early Childhood Screening, Head Start, schools and public health settings.

Register for Hearing and Vision Screening Advanced Skills for Nurses - $105/person

 

includes a review of current recommended and required C&TC screening procedures. This training Also provides updated information and skills needed to provide C&TC services consistent with program standards.

Intended for: RNs and PHNs who currently provide C&TC screening services and have attended a C&TC Comprehensive (3-day) Training in the past but have not attended a C&TC Comprehensive or Refresher training in the last 2-5 years.

Register for Refresher Training - $60/person

 

Custom Training Descriptions

Custom C&TC Trainings are intended only for those who provide and bill for complete C&TC screening exams: clinics, local public health, Tribes, and some Head Start programs.

Focuses on practical tools to support 1:1 time with the adolescent patient, improve youth experience, meet preventive health quality measures, and support health transition to young adulthood. Basic tenets of minor consent and confidential care are also covered.
Tailored to the clinic or health system's needs, and will include tool overview, implementation, interpretation of results, and referral resources.
Provides an overview of C&TC, information on evidenced-based best practices, required components of a complete C&TC well child exam, and program activities of outreach, screening, results, referral and follow-up with strategies for collaboration with community partners.
Tailored to audience needs based on where they are on the spectrum of learning and implementation. Core curriculum includes choosing a validated tool, successful implementation of screening processes, interpreting results, family-centered decision making, making referrals, community resources, and navigating a sometimes too-complicated system.

Hearing Basic: Includes basic anatomy, audiometer care and use, preparation and performing pure tone audiometry screening, otoacoustic emissions screening (OAE), pass/refer/rescreen criteria, and documentation.

Vision Basic: Includes external anatomy, visual conditions, performing near and distance visual acuity screening, recommended visual acuity charts, plus lenses, pass/refer/rescreen criteria, and documentation.

Designed for those who provide health related services to children and families, especially providers of any/all components of a C&TC well-child exam.
Outlines the C&TC oral health requirements, understanding early childhood caries (ECC), increased risks of ECC in the C&TC eligible population, use of the oral health risk assessment tools, and resources for oral health education. Includes information on requirements and resources for implementation of fluoride varnish application in C&TC setting.
Incorporate a Minnesota State High School League sports physical into a routine visit for youth ages 11-20 years who are eligible for C&TC.
