Asthma Training Resources

Developed by the Minnesota Department of Health's Asthma Program, a free 35-minute training module that can help youth coaches learn how to help players of all ages (K-12) who have asthma, play to their full potential.  

The training module includes animation, video and interactive scenarios that mimic the real life decisions youth coaches might face during practices and competitive events. 

Youth coaches who take the training course will learn:

• Basic anatomy-physiology of asthma
• Myths vs. facts about asthma
• Symptoms of asthma or an asthma attack
• The coach’s role in helping players control their asthma
• Rescue vs. control asthma medications (inhalers)
• How to prevent or treat asthma symptoms
• How to identify triggers of asthma
• What to do during an asthma attack
• Suggestions for working with parents and players
• A 10-question quiz to see what you learned and a certificate of completion you can print.

Start course: Athletes and Asthma: The Community Coach's Role

Developed by the Minnesota Department of Health, a free 30-minute training module designed for Community Health Workers. The training teaches about the signs and symptoms of asthma; describes medications, presents the correct use of asthma medicine devices, and how to identify asthma triggers. 

To access this training, you first need to register for a free account in the MDH Learning Center.

Search for the course title Helping Clients with Asthma - A Community Health Worker Approach in the search bar at the top right of the learning center portal. Upon completion of the course, you will be asked to complete a course evaluation survey. Once the survey is completed you will receive a certificate of completion. 

Developed by the Minnesota Department of Health's Asthma Program, a free 40-minute training module that includes a series of short videos, quick quizzes about common indoor triggers of asthma.

The training begins by introducing you to common indoor triggers of asthma and how to spot these triggers in a home. Then the training will walk you through how to do a home assessment and how to communicate and explain the basic steps a individual or family can take to reduce or eliminate found asthma triggers.

This training has been designed for public health nurses, certified asthma educators, and anyone else interested in learning more about environmental triggers of asthma found in the home.

The American Lung Association's Asthma Basics course is a free one-hour interactive learning module is designed to help people learn more about asthma. This course is ideal for frontline healthcare professionals, such as school nurses or community health workers, as well as individuals with asthma, parents of children with asthma, and co-workers, friends and family who want to learn more about asthma.

This program will teach participants to:

• Recognize and manage triggers,
• Understand the value of an asthma action plan, and
• Recognize and respond to a breathing emergency

The Asthma Management Education Online (AME-O) course is based on the NAEPP’s “Four Components of Asthma Management” as presented in the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP's) Expert Panel Report 3 (EPR-3): Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma Summary Report and the 2020 Focused Updates to the guidelines.

Participants who finish the course will learn:

• Information on assessment and monitoring
• Control of environmental factors
• Medicine management
• Patient education

The course has 10 lessons and four exams that you complete at your own pace. Respiratory therapists can earn 9.75 contact hours from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). Nurses can earn 9.75 contact hours from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).
