Here are some action steps you can recommend to minimize dust mites in the bed or sleeping area:
- Advise washing sheets and bedding weekly in hot water, above 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Stuffed toys should be kept off the bed and washed regularly in hot water.
- Mattresses and pillows should be protected in mite-proof encasements to isolate dust mites.
- General clutter on bookcases, shelves, and other flat surfaces are common places to find dust mite allergens. Reducing general clutter and damp dusting should be encouraged to control exposure to dust mites.
- Weekly vacuuming of carpeting can help control exposure to dust mites. For greater control, it may be necessary to completely remove the carpet from the sleeping area.
And finally, to reduce dust mites, overall humidity levels should be kept below 50% throughout the house.
As you will learn later in this training, high humidity can contribute to not only problems with dust mites but also other problems such as pests and mold.
