If the person sleeps on a sofa or similar type of bed, ask

• if they are covering the furniture with washable slipcovers or sheets, and
• whether they vacuum the upholstered furniture weekly.

If the person sleeps in a bed,

• check to see if the mattress and pillows are encased in dust mite covers, and
• take a look at the bedding and ask how often it is washed, and whether it is washed in hot water.

This information will help you decide what types of interventions to recommend if you suspect dust mites to be an asthma trigger.
