Video Transcript:
The action steps to reduce asthma triggers in the basement or utility room.
If this is a finished area, you can advise the family to:
- Maintain low humidity levels.
- Basements are often damp and need to have a dehumidifier to pull the moisture from the air. If one is being used, be sure the dehumidifier is emptied daily and cleaned often.
- Moldy carpets and textiles should be removed.
- Encourage the use of non-absorbent, cleanable flooring if a replacement is needed.
- Remove any consumer products such as air fresheners that put chemicals into the air to mask musty odors.
If this is an unfinished area, suggest they:
- Fill any holes in the foundation and near the plumbing with steel wool to remove entry points for mice and rats.
- Suggest that uncovered earth floors and crawl spaces be covered with barrier plastic. A contractor may be needed for this.
