The action steps you can recommend to reduce asthma triggers in the bathroom start with:
A ventilation fan.
All bathrooms should have a ventilation fan to eliminate moisture generated by bathing and showering.
Unfortunately, many fans either do not work properly or the family does not use them because of the noise.
- Encourage families to turn on the fan whenever someone is bathing or showering, and
- fix the ventilation fan if it is broken.
In addition to poor ventilation, plumbing leaks under the sink and around the toilet can be a cause of excess moisture which can lead to mold growth as well as attract pests such as cockroaches.
- All leaks should be fixed promptly, and
- any holes should be filled with steel wool to prevent an entry point for pests.
If mold is present in the bathroom, the mold should be cleaned up by using a non-ammonia soap and hot water. It is not necessary to use bleach when cleaning mold.
Also, encourage the family to remove any unnecessary consumer products, such as air fresheners.
And finally, if pesticides and cleaning products are being stored in the bathroom, recommend that these products are stored in a secured and locked area. If this is not possible, these products should be moved to a cabinet with child-proof latches.
