And in regards to portable air cleaners, many people use portable air cleaners to reduce exposure to environmental triggers of asthma. Often, these air cleaners are located in the family or living rooms.

If the home you are assessing does use a portable air cleaner anywhere in the home, it is important that the family knows:

• Air cleaners are more effective at removing particles than they are gases.
• Buying the right size air cleaner is important for it to be effective.
• Ozone or ion generating air cleaners should NOT be used because ozone is a lung irritant and can trigger an asthma episode.
