Video Transcript:
When offering action steps for reducing pet allergens, the truth is, it is very difficult to eliminate pet dander from the home, even with regular cleaning and vacuuming.
If a family member has asthma that is triggered by a pet, the best way to avoid exposure is to find another home for the pet. But, most families are unwilling to do this.
Alternative steps that you can offer are to keep pets:
- out of the bedroom, and
- off upholstered furniture.
It is also important to realize that once a pet is removed from a home, while their dander will begin to decrease, improvement will not be immediate. It takes up to 6 months of regular cleaning before dander levels will be similar to homes that do not have pets.
