What to report

Hepatitis (all primary viral types including A, B, C, D, and E) must be reported to MDH within one working day.

  • All laboratories are required to report the results of all hepatitis B and hepatitis C viral detection laboratory tests.

How to report hepatitis

  • Yellow Disease Report Card
This disease may be reported using the MDH "Yellow Card."

  • Phone
Any reportable infectious disease may be reported by phone to 651-201-5414 or 877-676-5414.

Other reporting: Chronic and Acute Infections in Pregnant Patients

  • Chronic Infections in Pregnant Patients
Pregnancy in a person chronically infected with hepatitis B or hepatitis C or other reportable perinatally transmissible diseases shall be reported to the commissioner within one working day of knowledge of the pregnancy. Reporting is required even if the disease was reported prior to the pregnancy.
    • Perinatal Hepatitis B Information for Health Professionals
In order to prevent perinatal transmission of hepatitis B to newborns, all cases of HBsAg-positive pregnant women should also be reported to MDH.

Submitting clinical materials

Submission of clinical materials (isolate, if available) to MDH is required for Hepatitis A upon request.

  • Clinical Materials
Clinical materials must be submitted according to these guidelines.

Who is required to report

  • Health care practitioners (health care facilities, medical laboratories, and in certain circumstances veterinarians and veterinary medical laboratories) are required to report disease to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) under Minnesota state law.
    • Unless previously reported, every licensed health care provider who provides care to any patient who has, is suspected of having, or has died from a reportable disease is required to report.
  • Any person in charge of any institution, school, child care facility, or camp is also required to report disease to MDH.
