Video Transcript:

When you recommend interventions to families, always start with the easiest and least expensive action steps.

If the easiest interventions are not effective, then you can recommend more intensive or expensive steps.

For example, when dealing with dust mites, the initial interventions would include:

  • encasing mattresses and pillows in mite-proof covers
  • washing bedding weekly in hot water
  • damp dusting, and
  • vacuuming the bedroom every week.

If, after these interventions have been implemented, an individual is still struggling with allergies to dust mites, it might be necessary to

  • use a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum
  • install an air cleaner, or
  • remove the carpeting in the bedroom.
