Environmental triggers of asthma include both irritants and allergens.

Common household irritants include:

  • secondhand smoke, and
  • chemicals found in air fresheners, cleaning products, and products with strong fragrances such as personal hygiene products.

Common household allergens include:

  • dust mites
  • pests that include cockroaches, mice and rats
  • pets such as dogs and cats, and
  • mold
