Video Transcript:
When you perform an assessment, immediately upon entering the home, take note of any moldy or musty odors. If you smell mold, assume there is a mold problem.
As you walk through the house looking for mold, you also need to look for signs of excess moisture. These signs can include:
- areas of water damage
- damp or wet carpet
- leaky plumbing
- mildew or mold growth in the bathroom, tub, shower, or on the walls, or near windows
- standing water anywhere
Specifically, you want to check for
- water in the refrigerator or air conditioner drip pans; and
- standing water around house plants.
Check how well the venting systems work, particularly in the bath and shower areas. Also, be sure to check if moisture producing appliances such as stoves, clothes dryers, or dishwashers are properly vented outside.
