Eliminating cockroaches and rodents can be tricky because you are dealing with pests that live within the walls of a dwelling. And if the home is a multi-family housing, pests can also easily travel between units.

While the first reaction might be to use a pesticide, Integrated Pest Management is the recommended strategy for dealing with pest problems. Integrated Pest Management requires that a series of steps be taken before using pesticides.

So, begin by first assessing

• which pests are present, and
• at what levels.

Does the house have a major infestation or just a few pests?

Next, you need to explain to the family that to eliminate pests they need to make their home less desirable to those pests.

This can be accomplished by:

• eliminating a pest’s source of food, water, and shelter, and
• preventing pest’s access into a home.
