AUD: Alcohol Use Disorder

Excessive drinking increases a person’s risk for alcohol use disorder. Alcohol use disorder, or AUD, is a medical disease often showing compulsive alcohol use, loss of control over alcohol intake, and a negative emotional state when not using alcohol. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism describes the 11 signs and symptoms that may indicate alcohol use disorder (AUD). There may be a diagnosis of AUD if a person has at least two of the 11 signs and symptoms.

NIAAA’s interactive tool lets you explore your own alcohol use. You can use this tool to better understand your alcohol use, and start taking steps to reduce risks.

Treatment and recovery are possible

If you are concerned about your own, or someone else’s, alcohol use, talk to your doctor or health care provider about treatment options. You can also seek help from any of the resources listed below.
