Video Transcript:

If water damage has occurred and mold is present, the recommended action steps to clean the mold include the following:

  • Discard wet materials that cannot be dried quickly. Absorbent materials that are difficult to dry out include:
    • carpeting and textiles
    • sheet rock
    • particle board, and
    • ceiling tiles.

If these materials have had water damage, they often need to be replaced because these materials do not generally dry quickly enough to prevent mold growth.

  • Non-absorbent moldy surfaces can be cleaned with hot water and a non-ammonia soap.
    • Use a stiff brush to remove the mold, and
    • rinse the surface with clean water.
  • Bleach is not needed for mold clean-up. Bleach is only necessary when cleaning sewage contaminated surfaces, such as after a flood or sewer back-up.

Finally, it may be necessary to hire a contractor when there are large areas of mold growth in a home.

The Resource Section has more information on mold and mold clean-up.
