Minnesota recognizes PFAS Awareness Week

Minnesota is recognizing Sept. 21–25 as PFAS Awareness Week, following Michigan's lead after it proclaimed the same dates earlier this year. Other states have similarly worked to raise PFAS awareness on their own timelines. Throughout the week, Minnesota state agencies and partners will share information about PFAS, why they matter, and how Minnesota is working to reduce PFAS pollution and protect public health.

Why it matters

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of human-made chemicals used in many products and industrial processes. Some PFAS can build up in people and the environment over time and are linked to a growing list of health concerns. All PFAS accumulate in the environment. Cleaning up PFAS is difficult and expensive.

PFAS Awareness Week highlights the importance of preventing future contamination, reducing exposure where possible, and working together to protect the health of Minnesotans and the environments where they live, work, and play.

Get Involved

Our goal is to increase awareness, encourage prevention, and connect Minnesotans with trusted PFAS information and resources. To accomplish that, we have created a social media toolkit to help you share reliable information throughout the week. Working on reducing PFAS pollution and exposure is truly a partnership and we look forward to having you join this effort.

This document provides social media posts for partners and communities wanting to join in on PFAS Awareness week. Each post is written to complement one another while allowing agencies and organizations to choose the perspective that best fits their mission.

PFAS pollution has been on Minnesota’s radar for more than 20 years, and legislation to reduce the use of these “forever chemicals” was enacted in 2023.
